MSV Life sponsors Exhibition by Melchiorre Gafà in Rome

MSV Life is one of the main sponsors of an important exhibition currently being held in Rome and which was inaugurated by HE Dr George Abela during his state visit to Italy between the 21st and 23rd March 2012.

The exhibition presents the recently restored wax sculptures, attributed to the famous Maltese sculptor Melchiorre Gafà. Melchiorre Gafà was active in Rome from 1662 to 1667 and was a contemporary of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Gafà was known by his Roman contemporaries and at the Papal Court as ‘il Maltese’ and is the only Baroque artist of Maltese origin of international reputation.

The exhibition, which comprised of five wax relief sculptures belonging to the Cathedral Museum Mdina, served as a very good opportunity to promote Malta as a cultural destination. Designed around Gafa’s major works found in Rome and links with the master’s works in Malta, the exhibition served as a window on Gafa’s standing in the Baroque world, in addition to serving as a point of departure for a cultural itinerary in Rome featuring the artist’s masterpieces as destinations. Visitors to the exhibition were able to visit Gafa’s other works located throughout Rome.

The exhibition is curated by Rev. Edgar Vella, Curator of the Mdina Cathedral Museum, Dott. Sante Guido and Dott. Giuseppe Mantella.

Presenting the sponsorship, Chief Executive Officer at MSV Life, David G. Curmi said “as the leading Maltese life insurance company we are indeed very honoured, to be one of the main sponsors of this exhibition. Through this sponsorship we are helping to enhance the value of our great Maltese heritage beyond the shores of our small island. We do this as part of our ongoing corporate social responsibility policy”.

Rev. Edgar Vella, Curator of the Mdina Cathedral Museum said “the costs of transporting these very valuable pieces of art to Rome and of organizing such an exhibition on such a large scale were very substantial. It is thanks to the cooperation and financial support from corporate entities such as MSV Life that has made the exhibition possible and successful”.
