Company Evolution

Mapfre Malta Insurance p.l.c. was registered in 1981 as the first Maltese insurance company transacting general business. In 1983 the company also started writing life business.

In 1994, Mapfre Malta was the first insurance company to be listed on the Malta Stock Exchange. During the same year, Mapfre Malta Insurance appointed its first agent and founded Mapfre Malta Valletta Life Assurance Co. Ltd (now MSV Life plc) in partnership with Bank of Valletta p.l.c., to focus solely on life business.

Year 2011 marked an important and very significant milestone in the company’s history. On 29 July 2011, Mapfre Internacional obtained a majority shareholding in Mapfre Malta Insurance p.l.c., and as at that date the company became a member of the Mapfre group.

In May 2015, Mapfre Malta Insurance changed its name to Mapfre Malta p.l.c. to be able to get the best from the Mapfre global brand which is present in more than 40 countries, whilst retaining the local Mapfre Malta brand. This is considered as being a natural transition from being a local company into being part of a global brand.
