Mapfre to neutralize nearly 90% of its carbon footprint across 15 countries in 2026

  • The use of greener vehicles in its fleets has saved the equivalent of 1,500 tanks of fossil fuel.
  • The company will cut the emissions intensity of its investment portfolio by 43% by 2030.
  • The insurer has publicly committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

Ahead of the International Day Against Climate Change tomorrow, October 24, Mapfre is highlighting the progress it has made in reducing its environmental impact and renewing its commitment to more sustainable ways of doing business.

The company is working toward this goal through a wide range of initiatives. Its targets include neutralizing nearly 90% of its carbon footprint across 15 countries by the end of the year, becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and reaching net zero by 2050. Mapfre also sets strict standards for the companies it invests in and insures, avoiding those in the coal, oil, and gas sectors that have no energy transition plan.

In 2025, Mapfre cut its global carbon footprint by 24% compared with 2022, beating its 21% target by three percentage points. It achieved this by using less energy, switching to renewable electricity, generating solar power at its facilities, and gradually replacing conventional vehicles with hybrid and electric models.

Commitment to sustainable mobility

By adding greener vehicles to its fleets, Mapfre saved more than 90,000 liters of fossil fuel in 2025, enough to fill the tanks of around 1,500 conventional cars. This prevented nearly 400 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. To put that figure in perspective, it’s roughly the amount of CO₂ absorbed each year by 20,000 Scots pines in Spain’s Central System mountain range. The comparison assumes that each 20-year-old tree absorbs 20 kilograms of CO₂ annually, based on MITECO’s Guide to Estimating Carbon Dioxide Absorption.

This progress also reflects Mapfre’s efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and find cleaner, smarter ways to support sustainable mobility. These include shuttle services connecting some offices with central city locations, bicycle parking, electric vehicle leasing, and charging points for employees’ vehicles.

Renewable energy

The company continues to expand its use of clean energy across the countries where it operates. In 2025, it expanded its contracts for certified renewable electricity to Colombia, Italy, Malta, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. These joined existing agreements in Spain, the United States, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, and Turkey. Using renewable energy helped the company avoid more than 2,000 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions last year. Renewables also supplied 89% of the electricity the Group used worldwide. Solar panels at its main buildings in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Italy, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Malta generated 3.5 GWh of renewable energy.

Responsible business

Responsible, sustainable investing is another part of Mapfre’s Sustainability Plan 2024–2026. By 2030, the company will cut the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of the Group’s corporate fixed-income and equity portfolio by 43% compared with 2022. Emissions intensity is measured in metric tons of CO₂ equivalent per million euros invested. Mapfre will also invest more in solutions that help the economy shift away from carbon and offer a wider range of sustainable funds. It has set specific targets to reduce the carbon footprint of its large-risk and auto underwriting portfolios by 2030, using 2022 as the baseline. Alongside these commitments, the company is incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into its insurance business and developing products that support the climate transition. It is also working with customers to help make their businesses more sustainable and resilient.

Circular economy and waste management

Keeping resources in use for longer is part of Mapfre’s environmental commitments and its efforts to run a more sustainable, efficient business. In 2025, the company handled 3,695 metric tons of waste, sending 92% for recovery to give it a second life. Each year, CESVIMAP also recovers around 700 metric tons of parts from accident-damaged vehicles through CESVIrecambios, its authorized vehicle treatment center. Reusing these parts reduces waste and makes the most of available resources.
