Safety Matters – travel safety tips

Travel may be a thrilling and eye-opening adventure. It’s easy to get carried away by the excitement of adventure. But don’t forget to think about travel security and safety while you’re away.

Follow these seven travel safety precautions to ensure a journey to remember for all the right reasons.

1. Do your research

Get to know your destination in depth before you arrive. Read traveller reviews and consult with locals for information about the safest neighbourhoods, places to stay and incidences of crime.

Another important travel security precaution is to know whom to call in an emergency. Get the contact information for the nearest embassy or consulate, police station, and other local emergency departments.

2. Make copies of important documents

You never know when a copy of your passport, driver’s license, or other form of identity will be required. Scan these papers for online storage and multiple hard copies. You won’t have to rush to get suitable papers if you need to return home.

3. Keep your friends and family updated

It’s usually a good idea to let friends or relatives back home know where you’re going, whether it’s for an overnight trip or a month-long overseas trip. Send a copy of your itinerary to a few trustworthy persons who can track your location before you leave. Check in with your contacts on a frequent basis to ensure that they are aware of your whereabouts.

4. Be wary of public Wi-Fi

Don’t let the ease of accessing the Internet cloud your judgment. Hackers aiming to steal critical information, such as credit card or Social Security numbers, can access your data when you use public Wi-Fi.

5. Safeguard your hotel room

There are actions you can take to make your room safer, even if your hotel has strong security measures in place. Keep your windows closed and the door locked and dead bolted. A jammer, which is a portable gadget that slides under the door for further security, can be purchased.

Place a Do Not Disturb sign on the outside of your door and close the blinds or windows to give the idea that you’re in your room even when you’re not.

Allow no strangers inside your room, even if they claim to be hotel employees. You can always call the front desk to see if someone has been summoned to your room by hotel staff.

6. Be aware of your surroundings

If you want to take the perfect picture for your social media platforms, don’t let your guard down. Always keep an eye on your personal possessions and use caution when speaking with strangers. Meeting new people and learning about their cultures is a large part of what makes traveling so enjoyable. However, if someone close to you acts suspiciously or makes you feel uneasy, leave the location immediately.

These suggestions can assist you in traveling securely, but no matter how many measures you take, the unexpected can always occur

7. Avoid posting on social media whilst you are away

Whilst it seems a good idea to share your photos with your friends on social media about your trip , please keep in mind that the minute you step out of the door step and the house is left unattended you might be  increasing your chances that your house is robbed whilst you are away.
