MAPFRE Malta, a proud member of the Malta ESG Alliance (MESGA) and a representative on its Board of Administration, is currently hosting a powerful piece of art that captures the essence of sustainable development. The painting, created live by artist Joe Farrugia during MESGA’s ISIMGĦUNA Conference, visually represents all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
MESGA is committed to fostering sustainable economic development in Malta. One of its most innovative initiatives is the Consultative Council for Future Generations, a youth-led council composed of students from government, church, and independent schools. This council provides a platform for young voices to engage directly with business leaders on pressing ESG issues, encouraging accountability and action at both corporate and national levels.
Held last November at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, the ISIMGĦUNA Conference brought together over 500 students from 42 schools across Malta and Gozo. Aged between 11 and 14, these students shared their concerns and aspirations for a more sustainable Malta with national leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, members of parliament, and other key stakeholders. Their discussions focused on how Malta can better collaborate to achieve the SDGs and improve living standards in a fair and respectful way.
The outcomes of the conference were compiled into a manifesto, which was formally presented to national authorities and relevant bodies. The Ministry of Education later submitted this document to the United Nations, where it was met with enthusiasm and inspired similar youth-led initiatives in other countries.
Joe Farrugia’s painting, created in real-time during the conference, now hangs on the upstairs landing of Middlesea House, just outside the CEO’s office. The artwork serves as a vivid reminder of the students’ vision and the urgent need for action. It highlights key societal challenges such as poverty, global unity, and the well-being of future generations.
To further promote MESGA’s mission, the painting is touring schools and the head offices of MESGA members, sparking ongoing dialogue and inspiring action. At the request of the Prime Minister, it was also displayed at Auberge de Castille for several weeks and is currently featured on a public electric bus, bringing its message to the streets.
A soft copy of the manifesto is available upon request for those interested in learning more about the students’ proposals and the outcomes of the ISIMGĦUNA Conference.
