Fundación Mapfre and Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) are continuing their commitment to creating safer roads through a series of StreetSmart campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at reducing road traffic injuries and promoting responsible road use across all age groups.
As part of this ongoing collaboration, StreetSmart will once again participate in Science in the City (SITC), Malta’s flagship science and research festival, which forms part of the European Researchers’ Night celebrated simultaneously in more than 300 cities across Europe.
During the event, the StreetSmart team will engage participants through interactive road safety games and activities designed to educate the public on pedestrian safety, the dangers of distracted driving, and the risks associated with texting while behind the wheel. Through hands-on learning experiences, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to better understand the importance of making safe decisions on the road.
StreetSmart will also be present during MCAST Fresher’s Week, where the focus will be on young people who are either preparing to start driving or have recently obtained their driving licence. Over the course of the event, students and lecturers visiting the stand will have the opportunity to discuss key road safety topics including the Vision Zero approach, the effects of alcohol misuse and illicit drug use on driving, and the growing concern surrounding mobile phone use and other distractions while driving.
In addition, StreetSmart will collaborate with the Malta Medical Students’ Association (MMSA) during its annual Training and Resource Development Seminar. These sessions will serve a dual purpose: educating future healthcare professionals on road safety issues while also recruiting new volunteers to join the StreetSmart team. The target audience will consist of medical students, many of whom are at the stage of beginning their driving journey, making them an ideal group for early intervention and awareness-building. The sessions will be highly interactive, encouraging discussion and active participation.
Through these initiatives, StreetSmart will engage with a diverse audience that includes young children and families, students and young adults, as well as experienced drivers. Beyond delivering important messages about pedestrian safety, distracted driving, and the impact of alcohol and drug use on driving ability, the sessions provide a platform for meaningful conversations about personal experiences, concerns, and shared responsibilities on the road.
Looking ahead, D4RS is also planning a number of additional outreach projects, including:
- StreetSmart sessions for primary school children, organised in collaboration with schools and Local Councils.
- Road safety sessions for Sixth Form students at St Aloysius Sixth Form, De La Salle Sixth Form and Junior College. These sessions have become an annual fixture due to their popularity and relevance among students approaching driving age and considering obtaining their driving licence and first vehicle.
- StreetSmart sessions with MCAST’s Community College for the Third Age. Following the success of previous sessions, D4RS has been invited to deliver further workshops tailored to older adults, with additional sessions planned in the coming months.
Through these activities and many more planned initiatives, Fundación Mapfre and Doctors for Road Safety reaffirm their shared commitment to promoting road safety awareness, encouraging responsible behaviour, and contributing towards safer roads for all.
