Fundación MAPFRE supports PutitAway campaign against texting while driving

An educational campaign launched this week aims to inform motorists on the dangers of using the mobile while driving. Although such practise is against the law, it is still a common occurrence and an average of 2,000 local drivers are fined each month. Research has shown that drivers are four times more likely to be in an accident if they use a phone while driving. This is because reaction time is three times slower when texting and a split-second lapse can easily result in an accident.

The PutitAway campaign, designed by Bay Radio, aims to make Maltese roads safer by encouraging motorists to avoid being disturbed by mobile phones while on the road.

The campaign will run throughout the summer months as a constant reminder to put the phone away before starting the engine.
As part of the campaign, an informational website has been created on www.putitaway.com.mt highlighting the danger of using the phone while driving. This campaign is also supported by other entities such as Transport Malta, Malta Road Safety Council, Times of Malta, Firetech and the Ministry of Health.

Fundación MAPFRE supports this campaign as part of its works to drive economic, social and cultural improvements on societies wherein the MAPFRE group of companies is present. In Malta, MAPFRE is represented by MAPFRE Middlesea and MAPFRE MSV Life. The Fundación’s operations focus on five areas: Accident Prevention and Road Safety, Insurance and Social Protection, Culture, Social Action and Health Promotion.
“We are pleased to contribute towards such a campaign, because it is important to instill a culture of preventing accidents” said Felipe Navarro, MAPFRE Middlesea CEO.
