New RetireSmart platform launched to boost pension awareness and financial planning

The Ministry for Social Policy and Childrens Rights, through its GEMMA branch, has officially launched RetireSmart, a new free online platform designed to help citizens better understand their future pension expectations and improve their financial literacy. Available as both a mobile app and a website, the tool functions as a calculator to raise awareness about the critical importance of planning for retirement well in advance.

The initiative was announced during a press conference detailing a partnership between GEMMA, Bank of Valletta, and MAPFRE MSV Life. Minister Michael Falzon highlighted that planning for retirement is one of the most significant financial decisions a person can make. He explained that the tool provides an estimate of a person’s potential state pension and indicates their expected retirement age based on current data.

A key feature of the RetireSmart tool is its ability to go beyond providing a single figure. The calculator demonstrates how specific life events, such as career breaks, periods without social security contributions, changes in employment status, or the chosen age of retirement, can directly impact the final pension amount. This allows users to see the tangible consequences of their professional and financial choices.

Gordon Cordina, Chairperson of Bank of Valletta and MAPFRE MSV Life, emphasized the necessity of proactive financial planning in the context of an aging population. He remarked that the app serves as a vital resource for staying informed and making timely decisions to ensure long-term financial well-being.

Michael Galea, representing MAPFRE MSV Life, added that the app turns the often abstract concept of retirement planning into a simple and practical application. He noted that the partners involved were unanimous in their goal to provide a consistent message regarding financial preparation.

Simon Azzopardi, Chief Personal and Wealth Officer at Bank of Valletta, concluded by stating that the app empowers users to foster a stronger savings culture. Beyond just tracking years of work, the platform offers actionable recommendations and alternative strategies to help bridge the income gap, ensuring that individuals can maintain a high standard of living throughout their retirement years.
